Hi, just saw your message asking anyone researching the swinney name to get in touch. My great grandmother Margaret was a swinney, she married my great grandfather Joseph Elliott although I am not sure of the date. On the 1871 census they are living as a family with 8 children. On the 1861 census she is living with her parents James & Jane but has already got a son Robert(1) & a daughter Jane Isabella(4). Also living there are her brothers Henry C & James & a sister Sarah J. Are these swinneys in your family tree?

Don't know if this is any help but I have been researching 'Melia' family.  In 1861 Mary + John Melia had son James.  On birth certificate her maiden name was Swinney.  Tried to find Mary Swinney on 1851 census and couldn't find anything.  However I did find a Mary Ann MINNEY, daughter of Elizabeth (widow) who also had 3 sons John, Thomas & William, living at 73 Bell Street, North Shields.  Also on census John Maly living at 76 Bell Street.  I think this could be the John + Mary I was looking for.   Hope this makes sense  :-\
