Baptism records c. 1800 - 1818, Belfast
« on: Sunday 05 February 06 18:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I was wondering whether anyone with any local knowledge of the parish registers of Belfast could help me.

I have been searching for the baptisms of my CORBETT ancestors who were from Belfast.

Edward Corbett b. 1798
William Corbett b. 1805
James Corbett . 1810
Thomas Henry Corbett b. 1815.

Their father was Edward Corbett, who was born in Ireland in 1773, he was possibly married to Eleanor. Edward had a brother, Thomas Corbett, he was born in Ireland in 1770, and was married to a lady named Ann.

A few years ago, a researcher in Belfast checked the parish records for me but did not find my Corbett's listed anywhere. The church records and dates that were checked I have listed below, could anyone tell me whether there are other church records available please.

BELFAST
St Georges
Baptisms 1817-1870 Marriages 1817-1833

St Annes
Marriages 1745-1799. Vol 2 & 3, note, researcher said they were difficult to read. So were not transcribed to my knowledge.

Rosemary Street
Marriages 1761-1812

Rosemary Street Non Sub. Presbyterian Church
Extracts 1712-1790, 1812, & 1830

Donegal Sq. Methodist Church
Baptisms 1815-1835

All Souls Non Sub. Presbyterian
Baptisms 1782-1792
Marriages 1771-1787

Fisherwick Presbyterian
Baptisms 1810 - 1965
Marriages 1828 - 1945

Are there any other Protestant churches with records available in Belfast or in the Belfast area?

As you may have noticed, the research carried out by the researcher barely covered the dates I required searching!

Any help and ideas would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks.
Linda

Hello. Perhaps this link will help you understand a little bit more about what church records are available. For Presbyterian Churches, there is also a link at the bottom of same to an index of records held.

Hello Scotmum,

Thank you for your kind reply, and the link to PRONI. I have read their website in the past, I have also written to them in the past. It would seem that my research will have to come to an end, mainly due to the lack of Irish records available.  :'(  I was warned about trying to research ancestors who came from Ireland, I was told that I probably wouldn't get very far, and I must admit, after eight years of trying, I think it is time I called it a day. This might sound negative, but I see no use in me searching, and paying researchers to look for something that isn't there. The Irish land valuation records do not list my family, and my ancestors had left Ireland before registration of BMD's and census returns.

I really don't know where else to look in Ireland for answers.

Many thanks for writing.
Linda

Hi LInda
Had a quick look through the Glenravel Online timelines, which are a collection of newspaper extracts for each decade in the 1800's and came across a number of Corbetts.  Not necessarily the names mentioned but worth bearing in mind as you do you research, and I find the addresses are also of worth.

March 1842 - "Thomas Caldwell. solicitor of 161 Brunswick Street, was charged with assaulting, with intent to commit a violation, the wife of Mr Corbett, barrister at law, Fitzwilliam Place.  In his defence, the prisoner produced several letters allegedly frm Mrs Corbett, claiming an attraction to him.  He was bailed for £100."

April 1870 - "A fire occurred at 16 Cranbourne Street, the private residence of Mr John Corbett, watchmaker, of York Street. His wife and two children were in the house at the time with him and were it not for the timely discovery of the fire, it seems the whole family could have suffocated."

July 1874 - "Robert Corbett and Thomas Lyons rescued David Spence from the river at Albert Quay.  Mr Spence was drunk and was drowning when the two men went to his assistance in their boat."

Feb 1876 - "A man named Corbett of 60 Sandy Row committed suicide at his home by hanging himself.  He was a man of 77 and was described as doating and was rarely left alone.  A boy called Moore, the son of Mrs Moore who also lived at the house found him."

Could this be Edward Corbett b 1798???

PS Doating for you non Ulster people roughly means senile.

Jan 1882 - "Catherine Corbett was charged by Rachel Camlin with having stabbed her in the cheek with a fork, at her home in Acedemy Street.  She was jailed for one month."

Mar 1884 - "Ann Jane McGivern, a prostitute, was charged with stabbing Lucy Corbett in Green Street and sentenced to six months goal."

Hope you are able to link in with some of these names or places, please let us all know.

Hello Gary,
Sorry for the delay with my reply, I have just returned from a holiday.

Thank you so very much for the newspaper extracts which list Corbett's in Belfast. I have printed your reply, and will keep it safe because in the future those mentioned might tie in with my Corbett family.

I don't think the that Corbett listed in Feb 1876 who committed suicide is my missing Edward Corbett. His wife Sarah & son, Edward appear on the 1841 & 1851 census of Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire. On the 1851 census, Sarah Corbett is listed as a widow. I haven't been able to trace her husband in either Ireland or England. I know that his name is Edward Corbett as this information is given on his sons marriage certificate in 1855.

Unfortunately, being without the baptism records from Ireland, I can not make a certain link to any Corbett family in Antrim. My Corbett family came to England c.1818. My grt grt grt grandfather James Corbett's youngest brother was the only one of the siblings born in England, his birth date was 1819 and he was born in Stockport, near Manchester.

I know that two generations of my Corbett' family came to England and settled in the Manchester area for work......they were all cotton weavers. Two brothers Thomas Corbett b.1770 in Ireland, and Edward Corbett b.1773 and their wives & children. I am sure that other Corbett family members would have remained in Ireland, and in particular, in the Belfast area. But, I can not find a link.

Once again, many thanks for your help and kindness Gary, it is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Linda
