Thanks for your reply - I'm a little confused because I actually had William Chivers (born 1866) down as having a father called Samuel (born 1835), with a mother called Mary Ann...
How do I know which is correct?

I'm confused now because in your original message you said that he was born in 1864 and now you say 1866, which is correct ?
Where did you get the info for his parents ? from his birth certificate /
Maybe I can help you sort this out.

Please let me know what you find, maybe there is a link to my Chivers.
I did find the baptism of William Mark son of Samuel and Mary Ann on July 1867.

Okay, have traced a copy of William's birth certificate, and he was born 1864, and you are correct - he was born to a spinster, Emma Chivers.  Your information has been really useful, thanks.
If you have information about Emma's father William that'd be brilliant.
sorry for the confusion - I'd be interested to know how your friend fits into all this too!
