That sounds exactly as happens here - just different words. My personal experience has been if an estate is left to a spouse, most institutions will simply transfer the assets, if it is left to anyone else & is over a certain amount, they demand probate.

Many thanks for your address links. I may have found my date of death, in some notes of my mother, so will check that on SP & then send some mail. The gentleman supposedly left a large estate to my g grandmother - there seems to have been many folklore stories that reached us in Australia - so I like to check the reality.   ;D  ;D

Hi Trish,

Oops I've given you erroneous information!!

All Commissary records prior to 1/1/1996 are held at the National Archives of Scotland @ HM Register House, 2 Princes Street, Edinburgh EH1 3YY (Tel: 0131-535-1352).  After that records are held as I said at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
