Ettershank - birth lookup; death
« on: Wednesday 08 February 06 11:02 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for my great grandfather, George Ettershank. I find him in Barony, Glasgow, marrying: The entry in the Register of Banns and Marriages (we have the copy) says "George Ettershank Spirit Dealer Anderston & Catherine Higgins residing there. Married at Glasgow the 13th day of November 1848 by the Rev David Mitchell, minister of the Free St Lukes Church Catton Barony Parish."
I think he could be the son of James Ettershank and Catherine Higgins, b. 1822 in Kincardine O'Neil; they had a George. If he is the son of James and Margaret, in 1841 he was a servant in an inn in Union Street, Aberdeen (1841 census).
My great grandfather worked in  hotels in Glasgow as a porter etc. - same trade?
My great grandmother Catherine married James Stewart 7/8/1856 - so James must have been dead.
Cananyone assist me?
George.

Hi There,
Firstly, You might just want to amend your posting, there is a doubling up of grandmother's names...

Do you have the deaths of these 2 people..... because the certificates should have the parents names on them.

Waiting for your reply.

Hi, Jo,
Don't understand the first bit about "doubling up" - do I have two entries as separate topics?
Yes, I have the death certificate for Catherine, which gives me a fairly complete data set for her.  Her second husband, James Stewart, outlived her - described as "widower.

It's George, her first husband and my great grandfather who is the problem. I can't find him in census records, OPR, statutory records - nothing apart from the entry of his marriage. If I could even get an age for him it would narrow the field! Got any suggestions? Thanks, George.

Continued..
OK I am with you now..
I see there is a death of a baby George Eastershank,
Jan 1857, (Do you have this death certificate)
It says that his dad was George (deceased)
and mother is Catherine Stewart previously Eastershank...
She was naughty for marrying James Stewart under her maiden name, she should have been Catherine Ettershank...
from this, I feel  Catherine's husband George, died before 1855.. sadly.... and because of this, you won't get a certificate as we know it...
but maybe there is some way of getting someone to lookup a Monumental Inscription, for where the baby George was buried..
I think it was old Monkland....
will send the certificate if you would like..

The next step is to wait for the 1851 census to come on, it won't be long now.. :D( can't wait...)
and then you can see where he was born... and then you can pinpoint him ,  maybe to James and Margaret?..
regards,
Jo :D

Hi, Jo,
I sorted out what you meant about the doubling up - I had posted similar messages in Aberdeen shire and in Lanark.
No, we don't have that George certificate, and I would appreciate a copy.
It's kinda funny looking at dates and counting up to see when and where your ancestors were "naughty" - like my maternal grandmother with a 5 months first pregnancy!
Yes, been thinking about monumental inscriptions. A good friend in Glasgow found my grandfather's plot  in Jeansfield cemetery - organised a fellow to show us where it was when we were there from Australia last year. So we all trooped out there - the bloke stuck his heel in a bit of totally virgin looking turf and said "There he is!" Ah well, at least he was not weighed down by a ton of granite - he and his 5 other grave-mates.
Thanks again - any help greatefully received.
Cheers, George.
