Agnes Pattison, Low Paisley, Renfrew
« on: Saturday 11 February 06 21:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am researching Agnes Pattison, wife of Andrew Rouand (we spell it Rowand and it has be spelt Rouan).  They were married January 27, 1781 at Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew (IGI).  I have found Chris Knight's Genealogy Pages and he has a Agnes Pattison, daughter of John Pattison, born 27 Nov. 1752 but no other info about her.  IGI has an Agnes Pattison, born Nov. 27, 1753 same place, same parents.  I'm trying to connect the two Agnes up as the same one. Is there someone else also researching this family?

This may be another 1752 Agnes to muddy the waters slightly

Agnes Paterson born 30th March 1752   in Renfrew
Christening Date:   1 Apr 1752
Father:   Peter PATERSON
Mother:   Helen ROWAND

There are six other siblings for this Agnes

Checked MI's for Paisley

Paisley Abbey Churchyard
Andrew Rowand late farmer Candran 12.9.1830  age 80

Not sure if this will help as it has a place of residence to help narrow the search.

The BVRI has several Rouands listed in Eaglesham and 3 Rowands but none match your names.

Strangely the 1841 index has none at all.

Hi Marilyn

I too have problems with the rowan line in my wife's tree. Unfortunately they are not from the Renfrewshire area.
There are at least 7 spellings of the name to look for in any search:
Roan
Roane
Rouan
Rouane
Rowan
Rowand
Rowande
In the 1800s spelling tended to become region specific:

Rowand tends to be more common towards Renfrew and Govan.
Roan is almost exclusively found in Kirkcudbrightshire.
Rowan is Ayrshire and Lanarkshire
Roane/Rouan/Rouane are found all over the place as variations in recording but mainly in 1600 - 1700 births & marriages.

There were Rowans in Johnstone(Abbey) and Eaglesham as well as Paisley.
I know it doesn't help your specific search but it helps to list all the variants before you start a search.

Hi,
Thank-you one & all.  I appreciate the suggestions.  Also the cemetery transcription for Andrew Rowand.
Thanks,
Marilyn
