1861 & 1871 Census Lookup - Margate - HILLS
« on: Sunday 26 September 04 11:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have traced my ancester ALBERT E. HILLS, b.1852, Faversham Kent on the 1881 and 1901 census records.  Nicky kindly assisted me with a lookup on the 1891 census records.

Is anyone able to help look up the 1861 and 1871 census records, so I might be able to see other members of his household?  He would have been about 19 years old in 1871 and 9 years old in 1861.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Hi,

Do you perhaps have an address from 1891 census in Faversham or an area? the 1861 census is not indexed and Faversham is a sizable chunk of pages to search.

Hi Kate and Chris

Thanks for your help.

Kate - On the 1881 and 1891 census it shows his birthplace as Faversham Kent but on the 1901 census it shows his birthplace as Ospringe - not sure why that is?

On the 1881 census it shows him living at 19 Brockley Road, Margate and on the 1891 and 1901 census he was living at 2 Bethel Cottages, Margate. Does that help at all?

Chris - Do you think people recorded different birthplaces on the census?

Thanks again.

Hi ChiChi

Chris - Do you think people recorded different birthplaces on the census?

I do not think they did it intentionally, and we dont know how the enumerator asked the question.

If he asked "where did you come from"?, maybe they told the truth and said their last place of residence; but if he asked "where were you born" then obviously it would be a different answer.

I usually get a map and see how close the locations are - they could be born in a small hamlet or village, but name the nearest town.

I was born in a small village in Nottinghamshire called Normanton on Soar - but when people ask me where I was born I usually say, Loughborough in Leicestershire. - (Loughborough is the nearest town  4 miles away, but on the north side of the river that runs through the vilage I was born in - so makes it in a different county)

Hi,

I cannot find Albert HILLS in 1861 in Ospringe although there are a few HILLS households so I think you're getting close. Wish this was indexed. Does anyone have him in 1871?
