1841 Northumberland look up please
« on: Wednesday 15 February 06 15:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Im sorry to have to be so vague, please dont spend too much time if it takes too long.

I have the marriage cert for my grandparents (very distant obviously!) from October 1851. I am unable to satisfactorily locate either bride or groom on 1851 so was wondering if anyone could help.

The info from there is Thomas Elliott born c1826 possibly Heaton, Blacksmith, Father William Elliott, Blacksmith

Ann Brown born c1828 Newcastle father Thomas Brown occupation looks something like Bookbinder.

The address i have is Manor Chare (Ann isnt there in the 1851 census) and Westgate Street (have found Westgate Road in 1851 but he isnt there either!)

Have found a possible 1851 but the age of Thomas is out by quite a bit.

Many thanks for anything you may be able to find

Hi lensgirl

It's sometimes useful to look at all Census years - birthplaces in particular may be revealed in one Census, but be vague in another.

So can you tell us what happened to Thomas and Ann after their marriage? Things such as children's names and birth years and places you know they lived and when.

With such information we may find your couple in later Census and then work back.

Hi Helen

In 1861 Thomas Elliott aged 28 Striker to Blacksmith, Northumberland Heaton
Ann Elliott 36 Northumberland Elswick
William 6 Durham Gateshead
Daniel 4 Durham Gateshead

Gateshead

1871 Thomas 45 Durham Hetton
Ann 43 Newcastle upon Tyne
William 16 Durham
David 14 Durham
Margaret 8 Durham

Newcastle, Byker

1881

Thomas 59 Northumberland
Ann 55 Newcastle
David 25 Durham
Margaret Thompson 20 Durham
Edward John Thompson 2 Newcastle

I hope that helps, although probably not much!

Hi Robyne

This is certainly a toughie - and frustrating because the Marriage was so near the Census!

I've searched for Thomas ELLIOTT, born 1821-1826, resident Northumberland or Durham and only come up with one possibility probably the same as yours.

HO107/2407  Folio 238  Page 47  Sch 192
Pandon Bank, All Saints Lodger U 24 Moulder Northumberland Newcastle

The age would not worry me so much as the different occupation.

I can't find any Thomas or William ELLIOTT Blacksmiths in 1851.

I'll take a look at the 1841 Census for the addresses given on the Certificate.

Hi Helen

thanks so much. I managed to find one in 1851, they were living in Durham and Thomas age was 19, father William mother Jane, both blacksmiths/strikers

The age is the problem and why i dont want to "claim" those as mine. I was hoping for 1841 to confirm or deny the problem. On their marriage cert age is "full" so they were certainly helpful there!!

Hi Robyne

I have a list of Piece and Folio numbers which contained parts of Westgate Street - I don't suppose there was a specific number given on the Marriage Certificate was there ?
