Felstead / Essex Record Office
« on: Friday 17 February 06 21:27 GMT (UK) »
Is there anyone who is going to theFelsted or Essex Record Office that could look up the following birth for me, Henry Searles was born about 1796 in Felsted Essex and I would like confirmation on who his parents were. It has been suggested that his parents maybe Thomas Searles and  Sarah  Willers as they had a son Henry born around this time. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi Jericho.
I went to the Essex Record Office tonight & I can confirm that :--
Henry Searles bapt 19 Feb 1797 in Felsted Essex.
Parents--  Thomas & Mary Searles (microfiche D/P99/1/4)

It does not give mothers surname in Parish Registers.
 Hope this is of help.

    Malcolm.

Hi Malcolm

Not the result I was expecting at all, is there any way I can find out what his mother's maiden name  is, would the Essex Record Office hold the birth record, how do I go about finding this out. Thanks for the information anyway, just another puzzle to solve.

Hi Jericho.
You could try emailing The Essex Record Office at
       ero.enquiry@essexcc.gov.uk
You would have to pay for the search, i don't know what they charge.

Hi Malcolm,

Have already done that and they could only give me the father's name and Mary's first name, as there is not birth records available, have done a post on the Hertfordshire board as Henry lived there most of his life and hopefully someone may be able to check his death certificate for me, have already gone down the wrong track with this one so I need to get his mother's name before I go any further. Thanks for your help.

The mothers name of Mary seems to be an error, all other children are of Thomas and Sarah.

Hi if Malcolm could go back to the records he might find the marriage in Boyds marriage index which are in black books to the left as you enter the search room. ;D

Hi geno500,

I think you will find that Jericho has the problem well sorted.  :)

I'm almost 100% sure that Jericho is someone I had contact with some years back and established that Henry's parents were Thomas Searle and his wife Sarah nee Willers, Henry was baptised 19 Feb 1797 at Felsted.

Malcolm was quite correct when stating the PR gave Henry's mother as Mary, but the mother's name in the baptism entries for the five siblings preceding Henry was given as Sarah and the same for the four siblings who followed Henry.  It is generally accepted by Essex Searles researchers that the church person who recorded Henry's baptism made an error, not one researcher has found any evidence of a couple named Thomas and Mary Searles in or near Felsted around that time.

Just for the record Henry Searle at some time slipped over the border from Essex into Hertfordshire where he married Mary Wright 16 July 1720 at Sawbridgeworth, they then founded a Hertfordshire line of Searles.

It could be that the person who recorded Henry's baptism was new to the job and not sure of the mother's first name, the surname for the five siblings baptised prior to Henry was spelled Serle, for Henry and his four younger siblings it was Searle.

Henry's elder brother Thomas is my ancestor.

Regards.
