Back Street, St. Ives
« on: Saturday 18 February 06 16:51 GMT (UK) »
Hiya,
Does anyone know anything about Back Street in St. Ives? I have my family living there in the 1901 Census. Apparently Back Streets around the country were synomonous with poverty, is this true? I'm just wondering out of curious nosiness :D
Katie.

Hi Katie,
No, the term Back Street doess not mean that your family were poor. The front street in St.Ives is called Fore Street, it being the one alongside the seafront. The street behind is back street.
Can I suggest that you visit the following site. West Penwith Resources at
http://west-penwith.org.uk
I think that you will find lots there for your research.
I have many photos of St.Ives (old) if you want some, I would need your e mail address.
Roy :)

I have an old map of St Ives and there is a road called Back Road west... I cant see a Back Street .  I can send you the map.
Before tourism got there most of the streets of St Ives old town where were poor folk lived, it was a fairly poor town as it was dependent of mainly fishing. Rich folk lived up the hill!
Back Road is on the route you'd walk to Porthmeor beach, close by where Tate St Ives is.

Hi, yes, a map would be great thanks! I never thought of it as the rich people living up the hill...this'll probably sound stupid :P, but what was the hill called? Not Barnoon Hill by any desperate chance?  :P
Thanks,  :D

Barnoon is one Tregenna another . The map wont attach its too big and to see the detail it needs to be big. You can probably get a better one from OldMaps on line .
attach instead a drawing I did . I titled it Skidden Hill but is actually of Barnoon Hill. The streets immediately out of the main town up the hill are so steep they have steps in them and Skidden Hill speaks for its self!!
Try Old Maps
