caedraw graveyards????????

hi all,
as a follow up to my earlier post about caedraw merthyr, since being informed that the place was flattened in 1960 i was wondering if anybody knew what happened to the graveyards, im sure they must still remain? anyone know?

The old layout of Caedraw (or the bottom of town as it is referred to here in Merthyr) has changed with some of the older buildings being demolished but I would not agree with the claim that Caedraw was flattened!

Caedraw is an area of Merthyr that still exists today and sits next door to St Tydfil's Parish Church.

The vast majority of burials in Merthyr up until the 1850's took place there. The other cemetery in use at this time was Thomastown Cemetery where most of the cholera victims were buried.

thankyou for that nig i was a bit curios as i was sure that the whole area couldnt have entirely dissapeared , so thomas town seems to be the nearest to it then ? is that right?

The graveyard at St Tydfils Parish Church is practically in Caedraw so I'd try there first and then then Thomastown/cholera cemetery.

Cefn Cemetery opened 1859 and even though some distance away, this became the main burial place for people of that area.

The cemeteries department in Merthyr are very helpful and are worth contacting re any queries post 1859.

For burials earlier than 1860 - GFHS has transcribed and indexed all BMDs for St Tydfils - NB the burial records are on the National Burial Index V2 - and have also produced a transcription of MIs from St Tydfils.
