Walter John EARL (m. Dec 1908)
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 09:51 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather, Walter John EARL (1884-1977) was married twice - I'm an indirect product of his second marriage (1928) to Emmeline Ivy Woodhouse. His marriage certificate states he was a "widower", but we don't know much about his first marriage. There's a chap of the same name married in the Basford district in the Oct-Dec 1908 register volume 7b p.431 - it's possible he could have strayed ovver t'brook from Sawley, where he lived, to Nottinghamshire! - meaning his wife was either Rose Pitt or Gertrude Towers. Our understanding is that his first marriage produced Wilfred (b.1909?) and Mary (b.?), both of whom might still be alive.

Is anyone able to tell me any more about any of this?

(I'm posting the same question to the Nottinghamshire section)

He would not have to stray far to go from Sawley (Shardlow) into the basford district.

Indeed so, but crossing the Erewash has always been a deeply distressing experience for those of us born on t'other side!! Not a step to be taken lightly, especially if to marry a Nottinghamshire woman! ;)

(Is this a dangerous posting for the Nottinghamshire section??)

Well, I have to admit to being a Derby County man, but there's nothing to "spout up" these days, is there?

And there's nothing wrong with you Notts chaps at all, apart from the fact that you were born ovver t'brook. I discovered that my family actually stem from rural Bedfordshire, so I can only claim three generations of Derbyshire anyway!!
