Wesham Park Hospital, Blackpool - 1950s
« on: Monday 20 February 06 09:14 GMT (UK) »
I'd be grateful if anyone with local knowledge can tell me whether Wesham Park Hospital, Blackpool (now demolished I understand) was a general hospital back in the 1950s or whether it had a specialist use?.

Many thanks in advance for your help

Julie

Wesham Park Hospital is not in Blackpool.  It is in Wesham, adjacent to Kirkham and approx. 8 miles from Blackpool and to the best of my knowledge most of it is still standing and in use.

It has never been a general hospital.  It used to be the local workhouse and latterly a geriatric hospital and I believe at one time also treated psychiatric patients.

Glenys was right it was a psychiatric hospital at that time. I remember my Mother telling me about it in the 1960's when a neighbour was sent there. My Grandmother died there in 1982 she had senile dementia so I think it dealt mostly with Geriatric patients by then but still had the psychiatric specialists.

My Nana died there around 1976.  She was 82 and also had senile dementia.

Wesham Park Hospital is in Wesham (pronounced Wess Ham by the locals!) as it is west of the then hamlet of Kirkham, now within Preston area.

As kids we would go to the local bonfire night in the grounds put on for the residents and latterly the locals too.

Once, many years ago, it was treated in a much more important way with regard to the community as it did house, as a previous lister mentioned, the workhouse.

However in later years it became part of the NHS and has catered for the needs of the elderly and infirm both in body and spirit.

Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Community Health Services was formed in 1993 of which Wesham Park Hospital became part of.  Now the Fylde PCT is there too.

This of course will effect any records you are seeking from this establishment if that is your aim.
