Family scandal????
« on: Monday 20 February 06 23:21 GMT (UK) »
I think i might have just found the first bit of scandal in my family which is just aswell becuause if i saw another bloody general labourer and other run of the mill stuff i may have given up.

My ggg grandfather George Nunn was born in abt 1836
he married Susan Howe in 1870. Susan Howe was born in abt 1848 according to the census'. But in the 1871 census i have found them with a five year old daughter and a 3 month son.

Could this daughter be from a previous marriage?

If the daughter was George's and Susan's would they have not got married sooner?

I believe out of wedlock children were not all that uncommon in any era, even the Victorian era!  Particularly if the parents were from the lower classes, probably.  I know that bigamy occurred reasonably often, too - one of my distant ancestors appears to have been a bigamist!

Others may have some stats on this.

Yes, a lot of mine appear to have had premature births - born six months after the wedding... ;)

I have recently discovered that, not only did my maternal gt-grandparents have their first child out of weblock, but all of them.  My gt-grandparents were never married, as my gt-grandmother remained married to a bigamist.   :o

Well, there you go, Braz!  Family scandals happen in any age, but it's good to have one or two to spice things up!!!  That's a pretty good one of TaffyBlue's!! ::) :o

You want Family Scandals,  boy, do I have family scandals  ;D

Bigamy - a lady who married claiming to be a widow when her first husband was still alive - the husband subsequently remarried as well.

A 3 x Great Grandmother with eleven known illegitimate children

A 2 x Great Grandpa whose mother did marry eventually when he was 4, whether this man was his father I don't know.

A 4 x Great Grandfather happily married with 2 legit. daughters, who had an illegitimate son with the daughter of his farm servant.  This son was left all the money and goodies in his fathers will. To be fair his two daughters and grandchildren got something but the boy had the lions share.

A Great Grandmother living with her future husband and their 2 year old daughter in 1881, they got round to the marriage bit when the child was 4.

A Grandmother who had three illegitimate children, she was married but her husband had left her some 10 years before the birth of her children.

A  Great Grandmother who appears to have vanished off the face of the earth leaving a husband and 2 small chilldren.

A Grandfather who mysteriously changes his christian name and is awol from 1891 and 1901 census.

A set of Grandparents who appear never to have married but produced at least 8 children.

Hmmmmm...I think that's all

I'm wondering if I aught to be admitting to all this;  I'm pretty normal by the way, married with two children both born well after the wedding date  ;D

In my family tree I have a child born one day after its parents got married.

Did they really hope that they were imagining things and it would all go away?

Did the excitement of the marriage bring on labour or was she already in labour during the service?

Did bride's father find his shotgun!?

I would love to know.
