Hi Ems, welcome to Roots,

I have no local knowlege, but do have the South Wales Valleys street atlas and there is a Gadlys Street and Gadlys Road in the Aberdare area - very near to each other, so i think you may be lucky to find it still there.

I am sure you will get more replies from others who live around the area and have more local knowledge than I.

Enjoy your visit to Aberdare.

Yes the local knowlege is very good...bit more specific to area than GR.

Glad to recommend it.  Hope you find what you need from the Brecon census.

Hi Ems

Every now and then I type in 'Aberdare' in the search field, in the hope that something familiar appears.

I was chuffed to see your Gadlys Street enquiry because I walked it a few years ago with my late husband to find No 13 where my Great-grandfather's brother, Simeon DEAN, lived from circa mid-1870s until death in 1902.  Regretfully, I didn't then take photos as several of the properties had been 'tarted up' with cladding to the front elevations but, otherwise, the street seemed pretty untouched by the passage of time.

hi DeeJay,
My g.g.grandfather lived at no;24 in1866 till 1880 when he moved to no;49.
Before that the houses were just called Wayne's buildings, Gadlys st as Thomas Wayne came to buy the mine.He lived next door to my family.
My g.grandfather and his brothers all lived on there as well at nos;26,73,and then 49 after their dad died.
I did see on tv (property ladder) one of their houses being "renovated" and that was strange. When they stripped it back to the bare bones you could see how it would have looked when they lived there.
I have found previous family from 1770 living on Gadlys but dont think it was actually the street then, just says Gadlys.
when i go on my visit i'll get some pictures so if you want i can get some for you also,
thanks for your reply, jane

Jane,
Sorry for delay in replying but I'm being swamped with SPAM from the USA and I lost my bearings amongst all the e-mails!
I'd be very grateful for any photo of No 13 as I will probably focus on the cemetery if I'm able to get to Aberdare this summer.  I usually spend a couple of weeks with my late husband's relatives in Brecon but I leave my car at home as I'm a very inexperienced driver.  This limits what I'm able to accomplish during my visits but it does mean that I have some rest days from this compulsive hobby!
My DEAN boys, from Somerset, did not arrive in Wales until the late 1850s and 2 of the 4 settled in Aberdare, but only Simeon & family remained there for the rest of their lives.  Eli is my 'brick wall' as he returned to his home parish and is recorded there in 1881 a widower, but I can find no trace of him, his wife or known sons anywhere after the death of a baby daughter at Commerce Street/Place, Forchaman in 1864 from phthisis.  I presume his wife and sons probably died from the same condition but I can't trace their death registrations and they don't feature in any census subsequent to 1861.  The problems are compounded with very common Christian names and variations in the surname from DEAN[E]/DANE/DAIN in Wales and Lord knows what else if they moved back to England!
Kind regards
Dee-jay
