British Army in China 1912?
« on: Wednesday 22 February 06 16:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying to find information on Charles Arthur Davis who died 15th April 1912 in China with the British Army.

I knew that the army were in China at the time of the Boxer rebellion, but not that they were still there in 1912.

Can anyone help please?

Hi Annie,

We were told this by his very much younger sister, who, sadly, is dead now.

His sister said that she remembered the date because it was his 25th birthday and the day that the Titanic sank!

He was born in Ireland.

Regards

Joe

Hi Joe!

Do you have him in 1901? - I've found 2 possibilities  - one with a sister and her family and one in a school - boarding - with a brother Arthur - was his father in the Army also?

Hi Joe

Have you tried to obtain his death certificate.  If he was in the Army it may be recorded in the Overseas deaths at The General Registry Office.  The info is all on

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/deaths/obtainingdeathcertificates/howtoverseas.asp

I have found them hugely helpful, even when I have phoned them

Aww fanks Annie  :D  It's got to be worth a shot - presume it would be registered in the British GRO if he was in the British Army  ???

Hi Wendi,

I should have given all the details that I know about the family.

Charle's father was English, but was in Ireland for a long time in the Paymaster's Dept. moving from garrison town to town....he married an Irish girl and had a large family all of whom were born and raised in Ireland.

Good idea about the Overseas Death Records....I assume that being Irish it might be best to try there first!
