1851 census:

Piece: HO107/1899 Place: Alternon-Cornwall Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Lawhitton Ecclesiastical Parish: Lawhitton
Folio: 409 Page: 8 Schedule: 30
Address: Higher Luckham
Richard Gregory, 35, Mason
Grace, 35
Mary A, 9
Grace, 7
Hannah, 6
Jane, 3
John, 3M
(all b. Lawhitton except Grace, the transcriber couldn't read her birthplace).

In 1861, there is a visiting Charles Vosper, 7, 'brother's son' - brother of Grace, presumably? B. Lawhitton.

1871, Lawhitton, District 4; Schedule 096
Wm Vosper, 49, St. Stephens, Butcher/Farmer
Hellen Vosper, 49, Steyning, Sussex
Hellen, 23, Launceston
Charles, 17, Lawhitton

Piece: HO107/134/3 Place: East-Cornwall Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Lawhitton Ecclesiastical Parish: -
Folio: 9 Page: 12
Address: Lower Luckham
1841 census (!)
Richard Gregory, 25, Mason, Cornwall
Grace, 25, outside census county

I don't think that this Richard is the one who married Martha Ford Goodman, between the 1841 census and the fact that there's little or no break between Martha getting transported in 1842 and the birth of Mary A shown in the 1851 census.  Unless Mary A was Martha's child, born before Martha was transported and stayed with her father in Cornwall?

There is a Richard Gregory in Saltash in 1841, Journeyman Mason, who could be the one m. 1842, if his wife d. between then and 5th April:

Piece: HO107/135/13 Place: East-Cornwall Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Saltash Borough Ecclesiastical Parish: -
Folio: 27 Page: 48
Address: Fore Street

Richard Gregory, 30, Journeyman Mason
Mary, 30
Eliza, 3
Charles, 1
all b. Cornwall

Also in Saltash, and on the same street: Henry Goodman, 50, a Shipwright, with wife Elizabeth, 50, Grocer, and daughter Mary, 15:

Piece: HO107/135/13 Place: East-Cornwall Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Saltash Borough Ecclesiastical Parish: -
Folio: 23 Page: 40
Address: Fore Street

(these are all from Freecen.)

Somebody might be able to find the Richard Gregory aged 30 in 1841 on the 1851 census (or his children) and see what's happened to them.

Hello Jorose
Thanks for the reply I had similar information from a chatter in Devon. It really is confusing.

It would seem from the information which I have, that Martha was pregnant with a son (William Henry Ford Gregory) when she was transported.

Thanks again for your assistance

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~stonemen/GRE-GYZ.htm - lots of Gregorys who were Masons are on this list.

So I understand that you are trying to work out who the Richard Gregory is that m. your Martha?  Unfortunately Lawhitton and Saltash are both not on the IGI - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/Lawhitton/ - you could try contacting the OPC to see if she has baptisms - I suspect that the Richard in Lawhitton's father is the Peter Gregory b. Lawhitton 1782 in the link above. also a mason, or possibly the Richard Gregory, Mason Pauper, aged 80 who is next to him in the 1841 census.  If you follow the links through genuki you can find the link to the Saltash page as well although the other Richard might not have been born there.

There's a Mary Ann Gregory d. Dec quarter 1841 S. Germans, can't read the reference properly though, the image on Ancestry is very poor quality.  Volume IX, page ??   The pages are bad but I think that's a possiblity for the Richard + Mary in Saltash in 1841.  Then he would indeed have been a widower for his marriage to Martha early 1842, presumably remarried in haste as he had two young children that needed looking after.
