what wars were fought before 1872 ?

I'm trying to find my gg grandfather prior to 1872.  In 1872 he married in Aberdeen and his address and occupation was listed as Private 93rd Highlanders of Edinburgh Castle. 1881 - he's living in Hamilton Barracks Scotland, Chelsea Pensioner Staff 1st Royal Lanark Militia
1891 - Living in Rutherglen, Glasgow, timekeeper and gateman

What wars, if any, would he have fought in prior to 1872?
Also, I'm a COMPLETE novice when it comes to researching military infomation and I'm not really sure how I'd go about finding further info on him.

If you go to www.regiments.org and type in The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in the regiment search area then go to history you should find a link to the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of foot which will give you a dateline history of were the regiment where for 1870/71.
