Grandfathers older brother and sisters
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 16:18 GMT (UK) »
Hopefully this won't ramble to much,I have discovered my Grandfather had two older sisters that know one in the family knew about.  They are on the 1901 census as Bessie Marston age 8 born 1893 London Forest Hill, James Marston aged 6 London Deptford and Alice Marston aged 4 London Plumstead. followed by my Grandfather William age 4months London Deptford.
I have checked the years each child was born and the years either side but cannot find them.  Am I doing something wrong?  could it be that they were not registered?  I have also looked through some deaths as I am sure the sisters did not grow up,(Croydon) :) My Mum thinks she remembers her Dad talking about his brother Jim.  Grandad went to Australia in 1922 for a couple of years and I wondered if he went because of his brother.
Sorry it's so long, I've been working on this group for so long I think I'm going mad.

Welcome Jan :)

I hope that you will visit us often and make lots of progress with your research. ;D

To start the ball rolling, I am going to move your post over to the beginners board, to see if anyone can help there.

Best Wishes
Rick :)

Hello Jan

Just a quick thought for now. Do you have your grandad's birth cert?

And what about his parents marriage one?

Lots of children did die in those days of course. My gt grandparents had 10 children but only 5 survived to adulthood.

Regards

Carol

Hi Carol
I have Grandads birth certificate,he was born December 10th 1901, mothers name is Alice formerly Parish (Parrish on wedding cert.) father is James Marston a fishmonger.
James and Alice married May 15th 1891 St Saviours church Brockley Hill London
I think that after they moved to Croydon about 1901-02 they was some outbreak of smallpox or something so they proberbly died around then.  It just seemed strange that i could not find their births , the rest of the family think i'm a bit mad looking for people they did not know existed

Hi Jan

Well I've found a possible Alice Marston.

Free BMD has Alice Jane Marston born Woolwich Dec 1896 ref 1d page 1314

Of course Bessie is most likely a pet name for Elizabeth,so will look for that next.

All the best,

Carol

Hi Jan

If you were asked where you were born you might give a completely different answer to where the actual office is to register that birth.

The Woolwich register office covered those births in Plumstead and areas around.

Google search Genuki and Plumstead and  you will see what else it covers.

Have had no luck with Bessie or Elizabeth mind you  ;D

Come on everyone what else could Bessie be a pet name for?

Hi Carol
Thanks for that info, I will have a look at google but later in the week.  Must go and check the dinner, it's going to be late today.  I have been looking at this site  for a few weeks and have only been  brave enough to post a question today.
Thanks alot
