Chatham Dockyards
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 20:27 GMT (UK) »
I have a relative who I believe used to work at Chatham Dockyards. He was in the Navy so presume he was on one of the ships there in the 1820s - 1850s.

How can I trace his working there. Do Navy records go back that far?

Hi

I think you'll need the National Archives at Kew for this one.  The Navy Barracks at Chatham (where I used to work!!!) now belongs to the University of Greenwich.

Kind regards

Hi Blue-Sten,

If your relative was attached to Chatham Naval Base see if he was born in the area.

Did he have brothers or sisters born in the area.

Did he have any children born in the area.

Is he mentioned in the 1841 or 1851 census for Kent.

Several of my ancestors sailed out of Chatham and they all lived at Gillingham between early 1800's to the 1850's.

One of my ancestors had the name of the ship her father was attached to when she was baptised in 1836.Nice clue. :)

If your relative was an officer there is a good chance his records are at TNA,Kew,London.

Please PM me if you need any more help.

Kind Regards

Steve
