1871 Forfar Census Look up please
« on: Tuesday 28 February 06 20:16 GMT (UK) »
Am trying to find out more about my great grandfather's time in Scotland Most of his life was spent in Yorkshire but for some reason (probably work - he was a WOOLLEN WEAVER) he spent quite a few years in Aberdeen.
His name was THOMAS CROWTHER and his wife ELIZABETH. In the 1881 Liversedge Yorkshire Census 2 sons were listed as being born in FORFAR,  the elder being aged 8 so I am hoping that they were there in 1871.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well the 1881 census says "Aberdeen, Forfar" which is impossible as Aberdeen isn't in the county of Angus (Forfarshire)

The IGI lists the birth of Willie Crowther, parents Thomas Crowther and Elizabeth Parker, in Aberdeen St Nicholas on 14 February 1873.

So it looks as if they were in Aberdeen.

As it happens it doesn't matter where they were, because you can view the whole 1871 Scottish census online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. You can also download an image of the birth certificates of both Willie and his brother John. Either will tell you the date and place of his parents' marriage.

happy hunting!
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
