Particular Baptist Llanidloes
« on: Wednesday 01 March 06 21:17 GMT (UK) »
Can any one tell me about the above Baptist Church.  My GGrandfather Thomas Jones and several of his siblings Sarah, John and Edward were baptised there.  His parents were Hugh and Sarah Jones.  They lived for some time at Severn Port, Severn St.  Any information would be greatly appreciated
Regards
Val :) :)

Hi Val

Can I ask where you came across the name?  I haven't heard of it ???

Edit:    Ooops, hang on........if you do a search on the IGI using C104701 as the batch number you should see a list of baptisms at the Particular Baptist, Llanidloes!!!!!

I found this:

"Particular Baptist meeting houses in Radnorshire were opened at Rock, near Pen-y-bont in 1721 and Newbridge in 1760. In 1792 a chapel was erected at Nantgwyn near the border of Radnorshire with Montgomeryshire. The Nantgwyn congregation, together with the small congregation at Capel Newydd (Newchapel) in the parish of Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire, was received into the South-eastern Association as the Nantgwyn church in 1797. The congregation at Capel Newydd was a branch of the Nantgwyn church until about 1838 when it became an independent church. The chapel at Capel Newydd dates from 1815."

Does this help at all?  I've attached a picture.

Hello Jan
Thankyou for replying.  I found the name on FamilySearch.  I thought it strange as it isn't mentioned in Ronald Morris's book Llanidloes Town and Parish.  An Illustrated Account.

Hello again Jan
Thankyou for the info and photo.  Just retrieved the book from my bookshelf and it mentions Newchapel and Nantgwyn.  It says these preceded the first Baptist church in Llanidloes.  Before the chapel was built the small congregation met in the Old Market Hall and The Old Swan.  The first church was built in 1824 in Short Bridge Street.
Thankyou again for putting me on the right track.
I am now looking to find Sarah's maiden name and where she and Hugh were married.  Any thoughts - please.
Regards

Hi Val!

I've visited this chapel in the hunt for Mantles, though not been inside. If Sarah and Hugh were married after 1837, they'll have a marriage certificate just like everyone else. Do you know what year they were married?

Hello Ruthie
Going by the age of  their eldest daughter on the 1851 census, they may have married around 1827.

Might be that the records are held at the National Library in Aberystwyth. Do you live in Wales?

Hi Ruthie
No, I live in North Yorkshire, and at present quite cold -4 and getting colder.  I think the majority of Welsh records are kept at the Library in Aber.

I'm a North Yorkshire girl myself (born in Middlesbrough when it was in the North Riding) but live in Wales now. I think I'll be going up to the National Library at the end of the month...
