For anyone who wants to help (can't seem to be able to identify him - the nearest match I see is a lodger in 1861, occupation porter and a servant in 1851, occupation errand boy), the 1871 census reference is
RG10/384 8 9 in St James Clerkenwell.

I've tried taking another tack.

I saw in 1871 that his mother was called Mary Feist born in Durham about 1804. Looking in 1861 I found a Mary Feist aged 57, widow, upholdstress (I think it says) at 2 Boss Gardens, Brighton with her 19 year old daughter Ann. RG9/593 Folio 138 page 21. Mary born Durham, Ann in Surrey.
