Wicks. James & Sarah
« on: Saturday 02 October 04 04:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,  I am very much still on a learning curve!

However,  I am researching JAMES WICKS and wife SARAH MANNERS who were both reported to have died in the Lewes Union Workhouse in the 1850s.  James' death I have located in 1857, aged 80 years but I cannot seem to locate Sarah's death.

Is there likely to be any further information in the Workhouse records?  Can anyone assist?

Also I have been told that there was a JAMES WICKS mentioned in the 1811 Population List for Lewes St. John (sub-castro), ie. "James Wicks, labourer, 5 males, 6 females, 2 families".  From what I can work out there must have been three James Wicks, as I have James Wicks married (2) Frances Page in 1844 who emigrated to Oz.  I cannot seem to find out anything about this James in 1811 Census.   Once again is there anyone who can assist with any information.

Many thanks.    Marie in Sydney

Hi there Marie P

Found these in the Burial Register for St John Sub Castro in Lewes - a Union Workhose was in this area.

1888 August 21   Wicks   Egbert   m      1.6   OTP
1857 August 13   Wicks   James   m   Poor House   80   All Saints
1817 May   4   Wicks   Jane   f      32
1886 March 3   Wicks   John   m   The Union   81
1810 November 24   Wicks   John    m      1
1854 February 19   Wicks   Sarah   f   Poor House   73   All Saints
1808 May 9   Wicks   William    m   1

If these are the correct couple, it would appear that this is where they are buried.  The All Saints is their original Parish.

Hi again MarieP

"Also I have been told that there was a JAMES WICKS mentioned in the 1811 Population List for Lewes St. John (sub-castro), ie. "James Wicks, labourer, 5 males, 6 females, 2 families".

I know the above is from the 1831 census information for St John Sub Castro - not the 1811 population list which is on the same cd, and only refers to the Voters and Jury list for St Michael in Lewes - this list does not contain any Wick Families

Very few census returns before 1841 survive, and if they do, they are just a head count of the population, i.e. - statistics.
Thankfully, someone back in 1831 made a copy of the 1831 which was stored in the parish chest for St John Sub Castro.

Hope this helps to clarify

Hi Chris,     Thank you VERY MUCH.  It does help me to sort it out and FINALLY I have Sarah's death.  I wonder why I could not locate it on the BDM.  Nevermind!

Best wishes.     Marie

Hi Marie,
Can't remember if I gave you this information before, but here it is again,

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Newick, East Sussex,  Date: 19 Oct 1803:
Subject: James WICKS, bach Maresfield
Spouse: Sarah MANNERS, sp otp (B)

I have a James Wicks from Leigh, Surrey marrying into the family I'm researching, BRAVERY.  This was in 1814 in Rusper,
Jane

Hi Jane,

Many thanks for your response.

If you have any further info on the name Wicks I would be really appreciative as it is hard to find much around.

Best wishes for now.      Marie

Hi Marie,
I have 260 marriage entries for the name of WICKS from 1579-1832, mostly East Sussex but some West Sussex.  If you can be more specific with names & dates, I'll gladly help,
Jane

Hi Jane,  Sorry for delay in getting back!

I can't seem to get further back than James Wicks, bc 1781 who married in 1803 to Sarah Manners at Newick.

I am not sure just how I can pin-point James parents.  If you have any ideas it would be appreciated.    Thanks.  Marie

Hi Marie,
Below is the marriage of James & sarah, note that at the time of their marriage James was from MARESFIELD, which might be a good place to start looking for the birth of James.  Maresfield and the adjoining parish of East Grinstead have one of the highest number of marriages for the name of WICKS, 7 & 8 respectively.

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Newick, East Sussex,  Date: 19 Oct 1803:
Subject: James WICKS, bach Maresfield
Spouse: Sarah MANNERS, sp otp (B)

This is the only WICKS male marriage in Maresfield before the dob you gave for James (1781)

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Maresfield, East Sussex,  Date: 22 Nov 1763:
Subject: Richard WICKS
Spouse: Sarah MEOPHAM

It might be a good idea to ask on the Sussex board for a likely baptism on the BVRI for James.
Hope this helps,
Jane
