Connolly/Collins of Ballydehob & Skibbereen
« on: Tuesday 07 March 06 14:13 GMT (UK) »
Timothy Connolly married Catherine Collins 1828 at Ballydehob.  There was a family farm nearby at Shronagree but the family may have moved to Skibbereen.  Children were Daniel (1828); Jeremiah (1831); Mary (1833); John (1836); Dennis (1838); Timothy (1841); Patrick (1844).  Dennis (my ancestor) and Timothy emigrated to Australia but I have no idea what happened to the rest of the family.  Would love to hear from anyone researching those families in that area.

Hello NouNou,

What denomination were the Collins and Connolly families? Were they members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland) or possibly Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hi Brodan,
They are both extremely common surnames in SW Cork.  If your ancestors came from the Skibbereen/Scull area they might be related.  When did Mary emigrate and where from?

Regards
NouNou
