Another name for Nancy

Hi, can anyone suggest what Nancy is a shortened name for, if anything?  I thought it was Ann, but I'm not so sure.  I have a Nancy born in Ireland but on the 1851 census of Scotland her name is illegible (but it's not Nancy) so it got me wondering.  This may be why I can't find her elsewhere.

Any ideas???

PS I put this under Ireland as she originated from there.

I had an aunt Mary Agnes... she was always called Nancy

I had an Ann in my tree and in a family letter, she was referred to as Nancy.

Hiya Lesley,

Nancy's name could be anything. I had a laugh when I looked at the site Jackie found. My Mother was always called Biddy but she was not called Bridget, Brigid or Obedience. Mothers Christian names were Jean Margaret Erskine.

Thank you all for your suggestions.  With these in mind I will try and read this census entry again.  Actually, the Agnes looks promising but I may be over-optimistic....!!

My mother's name is Mary, but, as her mother was also Mary, she has always been called Maisie, so I can imagine the fun people will have with that, in years to come.
