Help Please - where do I go from here
« on: Wednesday 08 March 06 23:40 GMT (UK) »
I have posted lookup requests in both Oxford and Berks regarding a Radbourne family of either county.  My g/g grandmother was apparently born in Appleton Berks (According to the 1861 and 1881 census) abt 1828.

I have had no replies to my posts so I am assuming the family doesn't appear on the 1841 census for these areas.

Jane married a Henry Ledger in 1848 and her fathers name is listed as Thomas Radbourn (gardener). Both spellings are used on the marriage cert.

There is a Radbourne family with Thomas as head in the 1851 Oxford (Whitney,Ensham) census, but how can I find out if this is my Thomas and if they are connected to Jane?

I'm trying to trace the family prior to Janes marriage in 1848. Can anyone tell me how to go about this.

Thanks in anticipation

Chris

Toby,

Thank you very much for this information.

Although the name is spelt differently it is certainly a possibility because the age of Jane and the mothers name of Hannah do tie in. Jane named her own daughter Alice Hannah so I'll certainly follow it through.

Thanks again

These are the Radbournes listed in the Appleton parish records.

baptisms:
1764 Jan 8  John Radbourne s/o William & Elizabeth
1766 Sept 21 William s/o William & Elizabeth
1769 Sept 7 Anne d/o William & Elizabeth
1772 April 5 Jane d/o William & Elizabeth
1776 June 2 Mary d/o William & Elizabeth
1778 Dec 25 Thomas s/o William & Elizabeth

burial
1772 May 10 Jane d/o William & Elizabeth

They're all a generation or two too early for your Jane, but you never know - it might be part of your family!  No sign of Jane born about 1828 in Appleton.

Katie

One of the problems with 1841 is that most of it is not yet indexed so you cannot expect an immediate response unless you are lucky and someone has that particular village.  Searching a whole area is very time consuming.   Help is supposed to be at hand though as Ancestry are promising it online soon.   That will make it much easier for all of us!
Remember that all ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 so take that into account when looking at the ages.

Toby, Katie and Andrea, Thank you all so much for this information I really appreciate it. I didn't know about the 5 year roundup of ages so that will be helpful in the future. I'll just have to be patient regarding the 1841 indexing won't I.

I have a fairly detailed family tree of Henry and Jane's children and grandchildren but getting back beyond them has proved difficult so this has given me something to go on.

Jane's birthplace of Appleton was given on the 1861 and 1881 census so I tended to think that that was correct but maybe it isn't and I'll need to look further afield. And yes their marriage was registered in the Bicester district (Bletchingdon Parish Church) in 1848.

And you never know Katie you may have found a generation back for me.

Thanks again everyone

Hi

I think this is the same Thomas in 1851 - still in Appleton - at the manor house no less, given the profession of gardener I think it likly that we are on the right track though with a younger wife and 2 young children he may be on his second marriage

from 1851 - Appleton  Berkshire

Thomas Radborne servant gardener born 1795  Marcham
Ann Radborne Wife Of Servant  born 1809  Appleton
Harriot Ann Radborne daughter born  1850  Appleton
Rebecca Radborne daughter born  1848  Appleton

Debbie
Pay(n)ton, Payton, Pe(a)rton all Oxfordshire and Berkshire - particularly Abingdon
