Clean up and possible date of Granny's shop
« on: Thursday 09 March 06 19:46 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone be kind enough to tidy up a photograph of my great gran outside her shop?

I'm also trying to workout a rough date of when this could have been taken.  I'm trying to track down where the shop was and a date would help with this.  I think it's in the Upper Holloway area of London.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hi AnjiM

Not sure of a date - poss pre WW1?

You might be able to date it using the advertising in the windows. Robert Opie's site may help with this.

Good luck ;D

Hi AnjiM,

Looked about early 1900s - then I put that sign "Mazawattee" into google and it came up with the Tea Co Ltd from around 1910!!

Cheers

Keep expecting to see Arkwright or Granville peering through the glass.

Thanks for the tidy ups. They both look good.  Not as grubby as the shop looked before!  I'm sure my g. gran was out there cleaning the front regularly so it's good to see it looking better.

And thanks for the suggestions on the year.  G. Gran married into the Rowlands family in 1912 and I know from a Google search that Mazawattee Tea was popular for about 50 years from its launch in 1887.  I'll check out Robert Opie's site to see if that helps narrow things down further

Hi Annie,

Thanks for taking the time to look through the London directory.  Grt Gran's name was Rowlands rather than
Reynolds so unfortunately the list of possible names didn't help  ;).  I did check the website, though, for Rowlands but the only entry wasn't a likely candidate.  Name and dates didn't fit.

I shall keep searching.

Best regards
Anji
