Info on "possible" Co. Cork location, please
« on: Friday 10 March 06 20:39 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate my great great grandparents.  The info that came from a cousin is that they were from Ardee, Co. Cork.  I have searched(seanruad) and the closest thing I could come up with is Ardeen in Co. Cork.  Do you think I should start in that location?  I found the parishes listed for that townland.  Is there any chance I can find that information on line?  Thanks for any help!

Kathleen

P.S.  The names I'm searching for are John Little and wife Mary Mathewson( possibly Matheson?)
Callanan, Little, McHugh, Maguire

I agree with both of you, there is no Ardee in Co. Cork.  My question then becomes, could it be Ardeen?  and is there some where I can check churches and records on line?  Thanks for your repsonses.

Maybe Ardeen. How about Ardree (thinking sideways into Irish!! Ard = high ree=rí=king)
or Ardnaree. Did the cousin just hear it/have it written down?

Sio

I have to think that it was just word of mouth.  She mailed it to me, but I think it was passed on.  I hate being this iffy about it.  But I really have no other ideas.  Of course this cousin is pretty elderly so I do question the validity of it.  I did a "Griffiths" search and came up with some info.  Here's what I have found:
John Little (he married Mary Mathewson, I think that could be Matheson)
County:  Cork (w.r.)
Townland: Ardeen
Civil Parish: Clondrohid
Barony: West Muskerry
Catholic parish: Kilnamartyra & Clondrohid
Diocese: Cloyne.
Is there some where/way I can check out this info and see if this John Little is the one married to Mary M?  Thanks for any help.

Hi Kathy
Do you have any ideas of possible birth dates for John Little? ie, would he have been old enough to have held land at the time of Griffiths Valuation (not sure when it was done for that parish, but sometime btw late 1840's, early 1850's presumably).
If your John Little  was born after about 1835 for example, it is unlikely that the John Little you found in Griffiths for this parish is the same as the one you're seeking.
Do you have any birth/baptism records for any of John Little and Mary Matheson's children? There could be some clues as to where the family were living at the times of the children's births for instance.

If you have anything at all re. dates/places from certs (also marriage) of their children, do let us know!
I assume this family do not appear in the 1901 census for Ireland, and they emigrated?

Cheers,
Mags

I don't have any ideas really, just that Little and Matthewson/Matheson are not common names here and probably weren't historically, so there probably be won't be much ambiguity once you're on the right track!

Also tht parish would belong to Macroom Poor Law union if that's of any help. Macrom would be the biggest town in the area.
