Joh Henry SPINK, Amble, Northumberland
« on: Saturday 18 March 06 19:32 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching the SPINK family in Amble, Northumberland.  If so please get intouch.  I have a John Henry SPINK b1883 in Amble.  Although the other SPINKs children were born in Yorkshire.  For some reason they moved up to Amble and then back down to Yorkshire.  Why? I haven't a clue.  I can only assume they had family up there.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Wildgoose

They probably moved up there for work as the father was a coalminer. Some of my hubby's family were miners and lived around the Amble area.

Have you tried the 1881 census to see if they were there then?

Many thanks,

In 1881 they are back in Yprkshire.  What puzzled me about the move to Amble was that why move from the middle of the Yorkshire coalfield for a mining jobin Amble?

And also why up as far as Amble, passing a million* other pits in Co Durham and Northumberland, on the way to get there.

( * = slight exaggeration )

Also a wee bit of detail.... as far as I know there was no coalmine in Amble.... there was in the Radcliffe/Hauxley area ( about 2 miles south of Amble) and in Shilbottle about 4 miles south of Amble. But Amble was a small port which shipped the coal out.

Only thing I could think of was that they had family up there.
