Carter of Southampton
« on: Sunday 19 March 06 19:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

The IGI shows that my gggrandfather Isaiah Carter was christened in Southampton 1825, with his parents being Robert and Esther Carter.

I cannot find any further information for Robert and Esther Carter, I wonder if anyone is able to help, any information is appreciated. There is a possibility that they are Gypsies.

Thanks.

Hi Fiona

Can I suggest that you have a look at our "Hampshire Resources" pages.

I'm not being lazy but, as you are looking for pre 1837 stuff, alot of what I was going to suggest you do + some is already there  ;D

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,353.0.html

Good luck, and come back with any specific lookup requests etc.

Hi Fiona,

The Isaiah Carter that I have found was baptised in Romsey in 1825, which is quite a different place  - is this the one you mean?

Have you found Isaiah on any census yet to confirm his birth-place?

Hi,

Sorry you are right the IGI says Romsey not Southampton my mistake.

Yes I have Census records as follows

1871 census says born 1823/24 Ealing Hampshire
1881 census - born 1823/24 Southampton
1891 census - 1825/26 Southampton
1901 census - 1821/22 Southampton

1912 Death certificate reads he was born 1817/18

Isaiah was married to Lucy Wells that is the right family that ricky has found, the fact that they were hawkers and basket makers, and the names of their children and grandchildren lead me to think the family may have been gypsy.

Wide spread of possible birth dates there.

I can confirm that it was Romsey - the original parish register entry may give you the details you seek but not guaranteed.  Found another two baptisms but they seem to be for the same child:

Eliza Carter baptised 5 Oct 1823 both at Hound and Eling.  Parents in each case Robert and Esther.

I wonder how they managed that?

Hi Nell and Fiona
I have gypsy's in my family and they are hard to trace, they say they were born here or there and the dates they give is confusing to say the least
