Tasmanian Edwards families
« on: Monday 20 March 06 01:02 GMT (UK) »
My wifes ancesters were amongst the first free settlers in Tasmania.

There was apperently a long line of "William Edwards". The family ran a hotel but I dont have a lot more information than that. They were Methodists from Wales.

Any ideas where to start looking??

Thanks

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

The best place to start is at:

www.archives.tas.gov.au

Gives all sorts of indexes to explore.

Good luck,

Ros

Thanks Ros,

The Archive was a great help. As a result I am looking for links with name EDWARDS in Scottsdale and Ringarooma, Tasmania.

I have confirmed 2 Williams but apparently there were more.

Any information would be great.

Thanks

Patrick

HI Patrick,
Have you looked at Jenny Fawcett's website, Genseek?

http://www.genseek.net/ozzlinks.htm#TAS

Jenny has provided indeces and transcriptions, as well as links, for alot of early information including in Tasmania.  I have been really lucky to find ads that one of my ancestors placed in a Launceston newspaper in 1833, and a news report of the inquest into the 1836 death of another ancestor in Sydney!  I found these on an index she had online, and then paid her a small fee to transcribe the full ad/article for me.

I hope you find it as useful as I have  :)

Prue

So we need to be looking for either
William Jordan Edwards to do with Ringarooma

and the one in Scottdale - do you have a middle name to help narrow down a person

do we have any names to match them to Wales
Mornington peninsula History - Flinders Cricket and Football club - HMAS Cerberus History

Hi there
the only way to get it right from the word lets look is unfortunetly to get birth and death certificates with such a common name it is hard to know if you are going on the right path
are you sure that you are after william jordan edwards?
if so i will see what is on the birth and death certificate ie what information they give re parentage it is a pity that the states do difffer so much.
regards jenn

Well as they used to say the plot thickens!! William Jordon is definately my wifes relative, one of his sons was my wifes Great grandfather. Williams dad William Ward Edwrads was actually sent down on the Good ship Duncan in 1840 or 1841 for stealing. :o He later owned the Vine Grove hotel and was a Wesleyan.

I found some information that leads me to believe that he also changed his name from Thomas Hinds or Hindes to Edwards!!

So any information on either of these names would be great.

Thanks again

Patrick
