Family Search
« on: Monday 20 March 06 15:02 GMT (UK) »
HEllo All, I have decided to post what most people would post when they first come here.

I am getting started on looking back through my family lines.  The family name is SYKES.  I know that my Grandfather was born in Canada (where I am now), and that his parents came over from England.  Also I am interested in finding a crest that would be associated with my family name.  If my search for SYKES goes well, I will most likly start a search on my mothers family name as well, COWLES.  But for now the main focus is on SYKES.

Hi CobraCats
Welcome to Rootschat
Have you found your immediate family in either the
1901 Canadian Census
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html
1911 Canadian Census (not completed on this site)
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/Test4.jsp
If you are able to find your Gr.Grandparents on one of these sites it should give you an immigration date on the original, which in turn, will give you a time frame for searching either Countries
If you are just starting out and require any assistance with your Canadian side you could always hop over to the Canadian boards

Well my grandparents weren't born yet in either of those census' so I guess I need to make a phone call or two to find out what I can, on my great-grand parents.

On the issue of the crest that is associated with my family name, I can easily do a search and find a picture (but at this point I refuse to pay for one), I would alos like to know what the symbols mean and find out if I can find a Crest that was actually issed to my ancestors.

Unless your family came from the nobility I doubt if they would have any crest issued to them.  Crests and coats of arms are issued to a specific noble family and other people who have the same name really don't have the right to use it.

Are you suggesting that my family didn't come from nobility?  Its funny how you know that since I have just begun searching.   :P

The family lore suggests that about 3-5 generations back the family was very rich, while in Europe.  This is based on research done by an aunt several years ago.  I am trying to get some of that research so I have a base to start looking...  any more suggestions would be helpful.

The majority of Canadian records, including birth, marriage, and death certificates, are organised by province, not nationally.  So if you can supply information on when and where your grandparents were born in Canada, and when and where they were married, someone will be able to tell you where you can get the marriage/birth certificates which will lead you back to the next generation and hopefully back to England and so on.

The Canadian Genealogy Center has good basic information about researching in Canadian records and what is available etc.  http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/022-600-e.html
