If they died in Stranorlar - would they be...
« on: Monday 20 March 06 19:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi

If my ancestors died in Stranorlar, where they also lived, would they have been buried anywhere in particular?

I believe they were Church of Ireland.

I am looking for the burial places and/or addresses of:

Barbara Whittaker - who died in 1941 age 86

William Whittaker - who died in 1933 age 78

and

William Whittaker - who died in 1899 age 77 in Sheercloon, Castleifn

Martha Whittaker who died in 1912 age 109

Eliza Coyle - died age 60 in 1920 in Stranorlar

Many thanks for any help.

My wife's ancestors were also from Stranorlar and last year we visited Stranorlar C of I graveyard.  We found her Kees and Griffiths there.  There are lots of well maintained headstones dating back into the 1800's.  The graveyard is attached to the church which is located in the town.
In PRONI, in Belfast, on Microfilm MIC.1/70 (Stranorlar C of I) you can view.........
Baptisms 1802-84
Burials  1821-1976
Marriages 1821-93
Confirmationa 1832, 1840,1845,1853,1857 and 1861

There's also a C of I at Kilteevogue, 4 miles west of the town but there's no graveyard.

Hi Cranstone
I'm just new here,  but I could'nt help noticing that you don't give up easily I admire that, so that is why I decided to try and help. I also noticed that Theresa is looking for the same families as yourself. Is there a connection? are you sharing information.? I dont know what stage you are at with your research. but I hope the following little bits of info might help. There are still Spence families living in the Raphoe area and they are all related and I have very little doubt that they belong to your family tree. I am not sure if they are Presbyterian or Church of Ireland but in any case the Spence's burial ground is in Raphoe as both these church's are in the town. Up until very recently there have been Spence's living in Beltany/Milltown (these are two towlands which lie adjacent to each other in fact they are within walking distance of each other. One of these churches would also have the marriage records of Spence/Whittaker. You say Whittakers  (my Spelling) lived in Sheercloone, well this is also a townland a about 2 miles from Raphoe near Ballindrait/Lifford.There is nobody of that name in the immediate area now. If they were Presbyterian their church records would be in Raphoe and if they were C of I they records are in the Clonleigh parish church in Lifford.
In the case of Eliza Coyle I would'nt be surprised if you found her marriage or death information in the R.C church in Stranorlar as Coyle was  and still is a predominantly Catholic name in that area

Hi Professor Tim and Colin
I have just come across your replies and I hope I replied to you back then but at that time I didn't know about replying this way only personally!
I am also Theresa!
My Whittaker/Whittager family were Church of Ireland.   I have found them so far coming from places like Clonleigh/Beltany/Stranorlar/Sheercloon and possibly Creaghadoos.  Most of them seem to have died in Stranorlar.
I wondered if my g.grandfather was born in Beltany in 1884 where would he have possibly been baptised and would it be possible to find his baptism?  His parents married in Raphoe Church in 1877 is the church near Beltany????
Would he have gone to school and where?  Did he have siblings?  I have so many questions!
On the Spence side there doesn't seem to be anyone else trying to find information but I believe they were a large family.  I found my g.g.grandmothers remarriage in Monellan Church in Donaghmore and her death in Stranorlar, she lived in Leaght.  Although if I have my g.g.grandfathers correct death, she married while he was still alive?  He died in Scotland so perhaps she didn't know if he was dead or alive?  They may have been separated or I may just have the wrong man!
You are right I don't give up, just keep trying to find them!
You say the Spence's burial ground is in Raphoe would it be attached to a church and which one would that be?
Thank you Colin for letting me know what bmd are available at Stranorlar and I hope you found your wife's ancestors there.
Thank you for your help and for taking the time to reply and I do hope I replied to you the first time.
Regards

Thanks for the website, I found the names of some churches in some of the areas I'm looking for on it.
