It's a really nice photo! :)

Unfortunately (and frustratingly!),the shoulder badge is unreadable and I can't make out what's on the buttons, and I can't find a match for the cap badge either!! so not much help really! ;D ::)

I'll watch with interest and hope that someone can identify his regiment.

Mick ;)

got me beat as well mick. I can not find the badge either, the buttons are general service so will not tell us anything and as for the metal shoulder titles (looks like one top-one bottom) like you I can not make them out.

Been through some of my Ref books, including one for Scots Regiments.
I cannot find anything remotely similar to this one.

I have not got time to go through my other books now, have to go out for the evening. If no one else can work it out I will have another go tomorrow.

We had this problem but with luck we found his wife on 1901 Census as Soldiers Wife In Ely, and he was on the 1901 Census for Alderney in the Suffolk Regiment.
As l say just sheer luck but it helped that we knew his name and the fact that it was dueing a Census period.
Wish you the best of luck with your researching.

Hi all,

Are you sitting comfortabely?

I have another thread going as to whether Dudley G Clifton was Rifle Brigade or KRRC.....Well, he had a brother who survived the first war. His name was Reginald P. Clifton.....I am trying to dig out a photo of the two of them together which interestingly shows Reg in a kilt.
I would love to find out a little more about Reg.

i deliberately left this thread alone hoping someone would positively id the badge but...

looking at his youth and that the uniform material doesn't look like standard army kit, i suspect it isn't a regimental badge but a school badge

Wow harribobs, what a wonderful theory, I had never thought that the schoolboys would have uniforms distinctive to each school, but of course  :D they would have.

How would you start to research such a thing ???
