THEOBALD Essex & possibly Suffolk
« on: Friday 24 March 06 09:29 GMT (UK) »
I have two William Theobalds, one of whom I believe is my ancestor, the William Tibbel who married Sarah Willis at Stebbing in 1802.

William (1) Tibbol baptised 13 April 1773 at Belchamp St Pauls, his parents were William Tebbell (of Cavendish) and Elizabeth Mason (of Belchamp St Pauls) who married 1 Sep 1772 at Belchamp St Pauls.

William (2) Tibbald son of Elizabeth Tibbald baptised 22 Aug 1775 at Gestingthorpe.

Does anyone out there believe or have proof that William 1 or 2 married someone other than Sarah Willis? ???

I have checked the PRs for Belchamp St Pauls, Belchamp Otten, Belchamp Walter and Gestingthorpe and found no marriage or burial entry for either William in any of those places.  Nor did I find any siblings in any of those places so the parents of both Williams must have moved on soon after the baptisms.

Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

Hi Malcolm,
Yes I have tried the Foxearth site but there is nothing there that I could see that will help.  Although having said that, some of the birthplaces shown in those 1851 censuses might be worth a search some time.

Thanks for taking an interest, your mention of the site prompted me to revisit it and note the places of interest.

Regards.

Hi, I've just been doing a bit of filing of transcripts which I will probably never have time to type out ::). They include:
Romford Saint Edward's baptisms
1830 24 Oct  William Charles son of William and Mary TIBBELL of Romford labourer
Essex RO D/P 346/1/5
I know the year does not tie in with the dates you quote but it may be a missing link

Thanks for that Clincher, all Theobald info gratefully received.

It could well be related, the Theobalds did tend to scatter to various places.  A gt X 3 uncle lived in Kensington palace mews in the 1800s as a groom, hence my claim to be "connected to the royal family"  I also had gt aunts who moved in and around areas such as East Ham and Romford etc.  At the moment the only evidence concerning the William Tibbell (born circa 1776) I am searching for is that according to the 1841 census for Stebbing, he was born in Essex.  So any snippets such as that which you posted are all worthy of consideration.
Nearly forgot to mention that the names Willam and Charles were frequently given over all the known generations of Tibbells/Theobalds.

Hi Clincher,

Many thanks for the Fordham Theobalds info, I'm always grateful for any Theobald info.  I have to admit I haven't come across anything to suggest there were Theobalds in Fordham.  I did know there were plenty of Theobalds over the border in Suffolk at places like Lavenham and Gt Waldingfield but there doesn't seem to be a link with Suffolk evident at the moment, still you never know what's around the corner.

Regards

Please note that I have now found stumbled across the William Tibbel/Theobald ancestor in one of the last places I expected to find him, Chelmsford.  He was baptised William Tibbles at Chelmsford in 1776, his parents were John Tibbles and Elizabeth French who married 1774 in Chelmsford.

So now the search begins again and yes I have searched Chelmsford  :-[ , also Moulsham St John and Springfield.

If anyone has a spare Elizabeth French (c1753) or a John Tibbles (c1749), any name variation acceptable, I'd be pleased to hear of them.

Thanks Clincher and Malcolm for your efforts to help.
