quick clean up & brighten

Hi,
my grandmother died recently, and this is the only photo I have of her brother in his younger days, taken in 1959 when he was the first in the family to get a degree! Her sister is coming for the funeral on Monday, and I'd really like to improve on the lighting in this photo - can anyone work their magic?

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother  I lost mine last year, so I can imagine how you're feeling.
