McGrory
« on: Friday 24 March 06 21:25 GMT (UK) »
Have found a relative, Michael McGrory on the 1901 Census in Maryhill, Glasgow. He is listed as -

Michael McGrory,Boarder,S,28,Stable Labourer,Worker,

Born - Ireland, Co. Donegal.

His father was also Michael McGrory - have his son's (Michael) marriage details which state he was a farmer married to a Mary Lang or Langon.

I am stuck now! Would anyone have any more detail???

Hi kargil,

What denomination were the McGrory family? If it's possible to establish the townland where the family lived then it may be possible to find which church they attended.

Michael, Jnr was born in 1873. The only Michael McGrory in the 1857 Valuation extracts of Co. Donegal lived at Castlequarter, Inch. There's a problem in that you don't know whether Michael was the first child. If he was then the guy in the valuations is probably not his father. Did Michael and Mary have a family and if so was there a child named Michael? If so then there's a possibility that the guy at Castlequarter is related.

not ignoring you - made fatal mistake of not backing up family history data and computer has crashed! Awaiting expert to - hopefully - save the day - get a new computer - and save and save again! Using laptop to answer emails. McGroarys were Catholic. That's all I can tell you just now

Hiya kargil,

There are three Donegal McGrorys listed on the Spinning Wheel Census (the Irish Flax Growers List 1796).

Thomas M'Grory, Kilmacrenan
Miles M'Grory, Fahan Upper
Edward M'Grory, Tully

Hello again!
Here's what I have on my tree so far.
Michael McGroary b.Ireland married Mary Lang (or Langon)
Child of theirs was -
Michael McGrory b. 1873 in Co.Donegal, Ireland. He married a Bridget Mooney in Glasgow 1904. On his marriage cert. his father was listed as a farmer. At time of his marriage - Mary (his mother) was listed as deceased.
Definately Roman Catholic (though that has changed over the years!)
Very long shot isn't it!
