Hello Boogie

A Master Mariner  whether in the age of sail or later the steam ship age was a fully qualified, certificated ships captain. He was equipped by his training to undertake deep water voyages rather than simply navigate the coastal waters wihin sight of land. He was the ultimate authority on board ship as well as the the person in whom final reponsibility lay.

The description Landed Proprietor stems from the time when land was handed out as a Royal favour. All land was theirs to give or take away. The common man (i.e. the workers of the land) could not own land, they could only feu or rent from the major landowner. Land was the major heritable item and many estates were inherited by primogenitor - in other words, the first born male. The rest would get goods or cash but the eldest got the land. Land rents constituted the income on an estate so he (always he) was the lucky winner by right of birth.
It has only been in the last 250 years or so that land could be bought and sold.
