If you buy the marriage cert, it will give you John's age, occupation and father's name/occupation.  That should make it possible to look for hil on the 1901 census (even with a relatively common name like Murray!) and work backwards.

The GRO reference is Manchester 8d 471.  (From Free BMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com)  You can order the cert online at http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/, or by post from Manchester record office:

Heron House, 47 Lloyd Street, Manchester, M2 5LE.
Tel: 0161 234 7878. Fax: 0161 234 7888.

Hope this helps!

What was John's occupation on the marriage cert?  Normally a marriage cert also gives father's name and occupation, but you say you're not sure the father was called John - ?

No problem!  You'll find folk on RootsChat who started their family history 30+ years ago, and others who started this weekend...  ;D

I'll have a nosy at the censuses now, and see if I can find a possible John with the right occupation.

Do you know if John (the son) had any brothers or sisters?  That could be really helpful in identifying the right family.

OK - I've had a look at the censuses, and there's at least one possible family in 1881, but nothing conclusive - I can't find the same family for certain on the later censuses.   ???

Let us know if you come up with aything new!
