Swainthorpe Union Workhouse - where is it?
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 08:34 BST (UK) »
Have found rellies resident in Swainthorpe Union Workhouse and wondered where precisely it is. She was an unmarried mother born in Bramerton. Could anyone familiar with the area hazard a guess as to whether this would be the local workhouse for people in that part of Norfolk? She had three children, numbers 1 and 3 born in Swainthorpe, but number 2 born in Norwich and I am wondering if that gives me any clues as to what she was doing.

Thanks for any pointers

Hi

AS far as I can see, Swainsthorpe Union House was in Swainsthorpe.  It was for the Hundred of Henstead.

Bramerton was in that Union.

Best wishes.

Thanks for the help. I was fooled (doesn't take much) by the fact that the place was referred to as Swainthorpe in a census. I'll have a good look at those sites.
