Are these place names in Lancashire?
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 20:31 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

From the Blawith Parish Records (1728-1832) and Lowick Parish Records (1718-1837) for Ulverston, as published on Ancestry, I have found details of some of my ancestors, however, I have no idea where any of the places that it refers to are located:

Littleknot (or Little Knot)
Stentongap
Riddins (or Ridding)

Does anyone know if these places are in Lancashire or would they come under Cumberland? I couldn't find them on Genuk or on multimap ???

Glenridding is in Cumbria, by Ullswater. That may be a clue.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Hi,

Both Blawith and Lowick are just north of Ulverston and were in Lancashire before the 1974 county changes.  I've looked in my copy of the Parson & White Directory (1829) but this time it has failed me.  However I have managed to locate Stanton Gap using an old map but it is difficult to see in artificial light as it is just black and white - in hilly districts more black than white! I'll have another look at the map in daylight tomorrow and see if I can find the other places.

I'm guessing now but Little Knot is likely to be a hill.

I have ancestors that came from Lowick Bridge, a hamlet within Lowick parish their name was PARKE.

Hi again,

I've had a look at the map this morning and found (1) Stainton Gap around four miles almost exactly due north of Ulverston, (2) Ridding Side about half a mile due south of Colton.  Both Ulverston and Colton should be marked on modern maps.  Sadly I can't find Little Knot.

I did think of posting a copy of the relevant part of the map but then realized it is copyright material, so I cant.  I will however send you a PM if I can manage to do this.
