Muirkirk lookup please
« on: Monday 03 April 06 12:49 BST (UK) »
In 1864 John Tweedie (widower) aged 51, tailor (christened John Baxter Tweedie, 27 March 1813, Troqueer)

Son of Alexander Tweedie, miner, deceased, and Mary Hair, deceased

married

Agnes Gibson Howie (spinster) aged 31 (born Muirkirk 1833)

Daughter of James Howie wright (is this part of his name or his job??), deceased and Anne James Gibson, deceased

At Muirkirk

I have a copy of the marriage cert

I would appreciate anything you could find in  51, 61 census or OPR
especially to identify his first marriage
or his/her parents ages

Many Thanks

Allan Smith

Don't have access to '51 or '61, but you may be interested in '41.

Couldn't find John Tweedie, but here is Agnes in the 1841 Muirkirk census - looks as if she is with her Gibson grandparents.  Her parents may already be deceased as there seemed to be no trace of them.   Possibly her father, James Howie worked for James Gibson and then married one of his daughters.
GIBSON James M 80 occupation Wright born Ayrshire
GIBSON Elizabeth F 75 Outside Census County (1841)
GIBSON Margaret F 35 occupation Dressmaker born Ayrshire
GIBSON William M 30 occupation Sawyer born Ayrshire
HOWIE Agnes G F 8 born Ayrshire
Ayrshire: McCormick (mack); McFadzean; Kerr; Brown; Paton; McGregor; McDonald; Moffat; Connel; Bone
Dumfries/Lanarks: (pre-1840) McDonald; Moffat; Bone; Hamilton; Hyslop; Sandiland; Bredwood; Kerr; Brown
Ireland (pre-1820) McCormick (Monaghan)

This could be him - age is a bit out, but they often were and occupation is blacksmith.   However, its the nearest fit out of 24 John Tweedies in the census for Dumfries, Galloway and Kircudbright.

Address: 4 King Street, Maxwelltown, Troqueer  Household No: 25/120

TWEEDIE , Edward son of John Tweedie SCHOLAR Age: 10 born Troqueer Kbt
TWEEDIE , James son of John Tweedie SCHOLAR Age: 6 born Troqueer Kbt
TWEEDIE , Jane daughter of John Tweedie Age: 3 born Troqueer Kbt
TWEEDIE , Jean wife of John Tweedie Age: 31 married BLACKSMITH (wife of) born Troqueer Kbt
TWEEDIE , John head of household Age: 32 married BLACKSMITH born Torthorwald Dms
TWEEDIE , John son of John Tweedie Age: 6 months born Troqueer Kbt
TWEEDIE , Robina daughter of John Tweedie Age: 14  SCHOLAR Troqueer Kbt
TWEEDIE , William  son of John Tweedie Age: 8 SCHOLAR born Troqueer Kbt

IGI Shows a marriage of John Tweedie and Jean Barton 24 December, 1837 Troqueer and this would fit very nicely with the birth of Robina aged 14.

However, you best bet would be to look on Scotland's people for a death certificate for his first wife - hope she lasted another four years and search between 1855 and 1864 or have a look at the 1861 census on Scotland's people which may fill in some gaps.

Ayrshire: McCormick (mack); McFadzean; Kerr; Brown; Paton; McGregor; McDonald; Moffat; Connel; Bone
Dumfries/Lanarks: (pre-1840) McDonald; Moffat; Bone; Hamilton; Hyslop; Sandiland; Bredwood; Kerr; Brown
Ireland (pre-1820) McCormick (Monaghan)

Thanks

The point of this enquiry is to more closely identify Alexander Tweedie
who, at this pint I have no information other than a name.

Age 51 in 1864 probably means he has already left home before the '41 census (age 28 in '41). So I need to find if his parents are 'deceased' on his first marriage
which may be pre '37.

This has been a 'block' for some years on my research into my maternal family line.

This info on James+Jane family may be relevant, however blacksmith is unexpected as the next 3 generations were tailors. Also my Johns father was Alexander - not represented in the childrens names - sometimes a clue. Also age is a bit out, and place of birth, which I expect to be Troqueer, where independant info says he and his twin were baptised (as were next and previous child)
It may mean that this is indeed John _Jean barton - but this is not my John - needs further clarification I think.
Perhaps in Muirkirk, Lanarkshire census.

Thanks again

Allan

Pulling together all contributions from various sources

John Baxter Tweedie
1813 – Born Troqueer – parents Alexander Tweedie and Mary Hair
1841 – census – Age 20, Muirkirk, tailor – no family (free cen)
1851 – census – age ??, Muirkirk, ?? – no family - only seen index
1851 – 61 John marries Jane (maiden name unknown)
1861 – census – age 46, Muirkirk, ?? + Jane (From England) age 38 no children (contibuter did not state job)
1863 – BMD – Jane Tweedie dies in Muirkirk
1864 – MC – age 51, Muirkirk, tailor, marries Agnes, parents both dead
1868 – Jane Tweedie, m/s Barton, died age 68, in  in Dumfries. Husband/witness husband John Tweedie, Engineer (so Jane Barton is not the one)

Leaves following questions

1851 – census, his age, marital status, job?
1861 – census – does it state which English county she is from?
1851 – 61 – when and where did John and Jane marry, what is her maiden name, on MC are his parents dead?
1863 – is the Jane that dies in Muirkirk the wife of John?, any maiden name or age recorded?

Unless anyone has anything else to add

many thanks all
