Laurie/Lawrie, Peter and McNiel Mary

Looking for Peter LAURIE/LAWRIE and his wife Mary MCNIEL.  They were married in Tynron Dumfriesshire in 1823.  We know they had two daughter, Catherine LAURIE born abt 1834 in Sanguhar and Mary born abt 1836 also in Sanquhar.  We have not been able to find the birth records for either daughter.

Peter LAURIE was a shepherd.  The OPR record shows his birth place as Dalmakerran and Mary's as Glencairn. We have searched the 1851 Census on Scotland's People, but no sign of either Peter or our Mary.  They may possibly be in the 1841 Census.

Mary LAURIE, their daughter married Archibald McMILLAN in 1875 in Glasgow.  Archibald was also born in Sanquhar between 1837 and 1840, but again we cannot locate his birth record.  His parents were Robert MC MILLAN and Christian MC CALL.

We don't know if the LAURIE's had more children, or if they died at a fairly young age.  Any suggestions as to how we can delve further into, what has been up till now, a futile search.   Best Wishes, Bonnie Lassie

Just checking whether you have looked at the 1851 census index on http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx  I cannot see Peter or wife Mary. However, I can see entries for a Catherine LAWRIE age 19 b. Sanquhar, Mary LAURIE age 14 b. Sanquhar, living at the home of Peter Drummond and family and Archibald McMillan age 11 b. Sanquhar living at home with parents and 2 other siblings.

There was one more entry that I found interesting for you which was that of a Alexander LAWRIE age 18, shepherd, born in Sanquhar.

Dear Monica,

Perhaps Alexander Laurie is a sibling of Catherine and Mary Laurie.  This is exciting, as we have not been able to find any evidence of other children.

Peter Laurie and Mary McNiel Laurie, have been our toughest nut to crack.  Can't find their births.  We do have a copy of the OPR showing their marriage in Tynron, but, of course the OPR does not give any extra info, such as their age, parents' names, etc.

Catherine Laurie married Robert Grierson in 1855.  The 1861 Census shows Mary Laurie living with them in Glasgow.
