Angus Archives lookup please
« on: Tuesday 04 April 06 18:47 BST (UK) »
Hello,
as a child, I was always told that an uncle had gone out to Hawaii from Kirriemuir, become rich, then returned to "boast" of his success, only to be found "sandbagged" and robbed by some person as he staggered back from the pub.  I have traced the 2uncle" as my grandother's cousin, Robert Whyte who went out in the early part of the 20C. and became a manager in the Sugar Company at Hilo.  I have no idea if the incident was documented in the local press.  If any kind soul is able to lookup the newspaper archives for Kirrie region around 1925, I suppose, I would be very grateful.  I would be grateful also for advice about how I might go about this research online.
thank you.

Hi Canniffe,

    The website:

www.angus.gov.uk/history/features/2003-09-anguspeople.htm

mentions that "Three brothers from Kirriemuir emigrated to Hawaii in the late 1870s, and started a trend.  Many of those who followed the brothers from Kirriemuir to Hawaii found employment on sugar plantations.  The number of emigrants was so significant that twenty-five per cent of Hawaiins of Scottish descent have forbears from the area in and around Kirriemuir."
