Scoble or Calland Scoble or Calland
« on: Tuesday 04 April 06 20:43 BST (UK) »
Would it be possible for anyone to look up
the Calland or Calland Scoble or Scoble families in Exmouth in 1841?

On his wedding certificate in 1841 George Calland Scoble is said to be an Innkeeper in Exmouth. His father who we believe was also in Exmouth was given as George Calland, a major in the army. I'm trying to find out if George's wife might have been a Miss Scoble and maybe I will then have found the link to the double barrel surname.

Many thanks

In 1851 George Calland Scoble is included in the census with his wife Jessey (Jefry!) as living in Bond Street, Withycombe Rawleigh, Exmouth. He is recorded as George Callands!! but I know it is the correct family as I can take them forward from then onwards. I know nothing about George Calland ?? the father except he was a major in the army as stated on George (junior's) wedding certificate in 1841.

Sorry this is so complicated but very many thanks for any help you can give me.

There is a Prerogative Court of Canterbury will for a George CALLAND of Exmouth proved in 1820 but this might be a little early for yours ...................... ???

Thanks Chris thats brill. I wonder if she is my Scoble link. If George Calland father was still in the Army she would've perhaps been on her own. Maybe it is coincidence that she was in Fore Street.

You put that George wasn't born in County but does it not say where? What do the Y and the N mean??

Thanks again.

Brig

Sorry Brig, Y is for Yes born in County. No POB were listed in the 1841 Census only Y or N in answer to were you born in the County. No relationships nor marital status were listed and Adult ages (Those over 15 years) were rounded down in 5 year lots therefore a person listing as age 15 is between 15-19, a person listing as 20 is aged 20-24 etc, ( if the enumerator followed his instructions.) Looks like Georges Enumerator did not follow instruction with George listed as aged 22......Cheers Kris  :D

I think I've found the answer to my CALLAND-SCOBLE quest. In 1820 George CALLAND wrote his will leaving money to Ann SCOBLE. That was the year that George CALLAND-SCOBLE was born. Maybe if I can read the poor script of the will I have solved one of our mysteries.

Thanks to all of you who have helped me. The biggest mystery of all happened in the 1900s but one day I'll get there!!

Many thanks to one and all

Brigcs :) :) :)
