Wouldn't you just love to find these in your tree
« on: Tuesday 04 April 06 20:51 BST (UK) »

I Have this Dictionary of Surnames, which gives you the origins/meaning of them. My favourite section of the book, is a list of names that have gone out of use, for obvious reasons. Here's a sample of the more repeatable ones:

Bucktrout
Cockfyssh
Drinkedregges
Evilchild
Horsepet (which apparently means horsefart)
Litelskill
Lusshefish
Pokepot
Rotenhering
Shepewassh
Strokelady
Underdonne
crakpot
Grindelove
Wetebedde
Blakeballoc (Black testicle - honest, it's real!)
Le Pettour (The Farter)
Singsmal (Sings badly)

And for the Scots out there:

Aydrunken (Always Drunk)
Luggespick (Ear Pick)
Sowlug (Pig ear)

When I was a child we lived next door to a family called Dafter.  They preferred to be known - and who can blame them? - as Defter.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Oooh those names have just given me a giggle - can you imagine if they were still in use - the deed pole office would be making a fortune.

I would love to be called Fiona Grindelove - never again would I feel like a broring old housewife.
