Many thanks for everyones help.  I now have James's Marriage Cert.  This shows his Father as Robert, Shoemaker.

I can find no trace of the family on the UK Census collection.

Can anyone help please

Many thanks for the information, unfortunatley they are not the right family.
I now know that James's father was ROBERT JOHNSON (c1790) a SHOEMAKER of WALLACE GREEN, BERWICK UPON TWEED.
I believe he had 2 sons ROBERT & JAMES.(c1824). His wife may have been ELEANOR and they may have had a daughter also Eleanor.
COULD ANYONE DO A LOOK UP IN THE BERWICK UPON TWEED RECORDS PLEASE

UPDATE - Robert Johnson

Many thanks for everyones help.  I now have Robert b.c.1779 Berwick and his wife Ann b.c. 1799 Berwick and thanks to everyones help have confirmed the link to my family.  Does anyone have the facility to trace Roberts parents?  He is variously Johnston with a "T" and also shown on some of the Census records as (incorrectly) born Berwickshire Scotland.
