I have Clowtings - tell me who you are looking for and I will see if I can help - If I can't I probably 'know a man who can' !

Hi M and welcome to Rootschat,  :D

Well Clowtings have been in Essex for a while as here as some from 1841!
Great Baddow 1841 Census data for Essex.
Record  Abode Name Surname Age Trade
1755  William Clowting 30  Ag Labourer
1756  Mary Clowting  30
1757  Emma Clowting  7
1758  William Clowting 5
1759  Alfred Clowting 3
1760  Joseph Clowting 1
1761  George Clowting 7

Best place to start though is by obtaining your parents birth and marriage certificate. This will give you a few names, dates of birth and places of birth  for us to kick about. If you know your grandparents names even better.
Once we have them we can look in a census. The latest census available is the 1901 census, but if you can get back to 1881 it is freely available at:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
There are quite a few to look at there, especially in East Anglia. There's also the IGI database of birth, deaths and marriages to look at too.

Happy hunting,
Geoff.
