Passenger List Question 1879
« on: Thursday 06 April 06 13:07 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a record of the following family emigrating from Durham England to U.S.A. (ultimately settled in Pittsburgh PA).  Subsequent census indicates they arrived in 1880.

John Fadzen (b. 1845), his wife Hannah Mary (Harrison) Fadzen (b. 1845) and their son John Joseph Fadzen (b. 1878).

I can track this family in the U.S. through their deaths.

A good candidate for John's passage to America is through Castle Garden.  The entry reads:  John Fadyen, laborer, age 33, male, arrived 20 Oct. 1879, origin England, Ship Italy.

Is there a way to see the entire passenger manifest for the ship "Italy" to see if Hannah and their son John are also on board perhaps under a name that was not transcribed accurately OR can anyone find any other port of entry and  records that might be this family.

Rose

I checked all the passengers on that ship and no one else by the names was on board that I could see. I viewed the original record on-line.  John was by himself and I could not find a wife on any of the 8 pages.

He could have arrived by himself and then the family came a few years later.  That happened with most of my immigrant families. The husband went first to make money for the passage for the rest of the family.

Thank you Kristin.  I thought the same thing but was never able to find information after October 1879 for Hannah and her son John.  Also, I know they were here in Pittsburgh at the time of the 1880 census so it always seemed more likely that they all came together, especially knowing she had a young baby to look after.  Do you know if perhaps it was not unusual that just the husband would have "checked in" with the person creating the manifest back then?

I would think they all would have been listed as each immigrant had to get a physical and go through quarantine.

As they settled in Pittsburg, you may want to seach for other ports of entry such as Philadelphia or Baltimore. I am not sure if much has been transcribed as many immigrants did come through NY.
